In many states you have rights similar to those outlined below; but even if your state doesn’t provide these rights you should insist on the procedures below BEFORE you hire a mechanic.

If you have a face-to-face meeting with the mechanic, the mechanic must provide you with a written estimate for the repairs prior to commencing work, if those repairs will cost more than some minor amount such as $25. If additional work/charges are necessary, the mechanic may not charge you more unless he/she obtains your consent before doing the additional work. Prior to beginning the repairs, you may request the return of any old parts, unless those parts are necessary for warranty reimbursement.
