We are not getting married; Do I have to give back the ring? Can I keep the ring?
Court decisions are all over the map on this issue but often, if your ex breaks off the engagement you do not have to return the ring. Some courts rule that you must return it if the marriage has not occurred. You may want to keep the ring until you are forced by a court order to give it up…under any circumstances you would explain that when he gave it to you he, by his actions and words, gave it to you forever and that was clear to you (it was not conditional on the marriage occurring)… there is a good chance you will have it forever.
