Most insurance policies have a provision that if you are receiving benefits, you will continue to do so even if the employer no longer maintains that policy. Under most circumstances, the policy under which you were declared disabled is the one that will govern your claim, even if the employer has changed carriers. You must, however, continue to be disabled under the terms of the LTD policy.
When a new carrier takes over, they often will re-investigate the existing claims to make sure that the person continues to meet the disability definition. Unfortunately, you are always at risk that the insurance company will try to terminate your benefits. Whether they are successful depends on the nature of your disability and the evidence you have to support it.
